Name: Harsh Parikh Age: 32Occupation: Electronics engineerThe journey so far...My life was like any other teenager, studying at the university, going out on weekends with friends, playing music and enjoying my life. I also enjoy sports like cycling and playing tennis. My other passion is music.Impact of the diagnosisI was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 18 close to Diwali time. After a cold, I noticed that I was constantly feeling thirsty all the time, and despite having500 ml water my thirst was not quenched. It was then that I realised that something was wrong and the need to see a doctor. The day before I visited the hospital,I remember I was at the cinema watching a movie and had to visit the washroom twice. The following day I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. After which I spent three days at the hospital. Since I was at the hospital I felt better as my glucose levels were managed entirely by the doctors, but once I got home everything changed.I started experiencing frequent hypoglycaemia (low sugar feeling)
also learnt carbohydrate counting. Deviating from my daily routine i.e., playing any kind of sports, eating at restaurants, partying on weekends or even playing music was my biggest concern.
After the first few months, I began to learn how to visually count carbohydrates, calculate the insulin dose, as well handle different situations e.g., if I was going out at night dancing with friends, I always carried some peanuts or cookies or if I went to the beach, I would carry sugar blocks. Also, within few months I learnt as much I could about Diabetes and became an 'expert'.
Often, I discuss with my friends and family about Diabetes. My family is my biggest strength and have supported me during the most difficult times. Since the very beginning my parents have helped me manage my Diabetes and today, I confidently manage it on my own.
After so many years of managing my condition, I personally feel I have gained confidence and do what I like. I have travelled to many places worldwide and have worked outside my country. Till date I play my music, enjoy sports and go to the beach. I even completed my doctorate degree at the university while working with a company. The most important thing that I realised post diagnosis is that you should make time for physical activity daily.
This is why I got used to exercising daily. Initially, I walked for an hour but as time went by, I got hooked to running and ran for an hour daily. Currently, I do static cycling as it gives me the feeling of indoor as well as outdoor exercise. The days I exercise extra I reduce my insulin dose by 10-20 per cent.
If you have been recently diagnosed with Diabetes, remember you are not alone as I have been in the same situation. It is important that you calm down. It is difficult but not impossible to manage your Diabetes and lead a normal life. Also do not obsess over your blood sugar levels.
Once you manage your blood glucose levels well it is important to remember that making exceptions in your diet once in a while is alright; however, these occasional exceptions should not become rules. Good blood glucose control should be of paramount importance.
Ever since my diagnosis, I have been determined to do things that keep me fit and healthy and encourage everyone else to do the same.
