The quality of diet may be linked to the likelihood of death due to health complications. People with metabolic conditions such as high blood glucose levels, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels may be recommended to lower their fat and carbohydrate intake along with exercise and medication to prevent further complications. A recent study published in the JAMA Internal Medicine has found that the type of fats and carbohydrates consumed in diet make a significant impact on the health of a person.
The study was conducted on 37,233 people in the U.S. of age 20 years or older and their dietary data was recorded for 15 years. The results showed that the types of carbohydrates and fats consumed play an important role in the link between diet and mortality. A low carbohydrate diet consists of lower amounts of low- quality carbohydrates (such as white bread, processed foods and sweetened beverages) and higher amounts of plant protein and unsaturated fat. A low-fat diet consists of lower amounts of saturated fat (such as dairy products, fast foods and shortenings) and higher amounts of high-quality carbohydrates and plant protein.
These diets were found to reduce the risk of health complications and death. The study observed that it is important to pay attention to the type of carbohydrates, fats and proteins that are being included in one’s diet. It is advised to consult your dietician to know about different types of macronutrients to balance your diet.
