High blood glucose levels may over time increase the risk of several complications such as eye disease, heart disease and stroke. A recent research study published in the journal The Lancet has found that even one drink of alcohol a day may increase the risk of stroke in people with Diabetes. The study was conducted on 500000 men and women in China and their cardiovascular health was monitored for 10 years. The results have shown that men who consumed one or two drinks a day had 10 to 15 per cent increased risk of having a stroke. One drink a day can be defined as a small glass of wine or one bottle of beer or 25 ml of liquor. The study has countered the previous claims that moderate consumption of alcohol may have a protective effect from stroke. Further studies are being performed to understand the impact of moderate alcohol consumption on the heart.
