Wellbeing Matters!

Diabetes while being common world-wide, is assuming epidemic proportions in India with an estimated 77 million people, a majority of them having Type 2 Diabetes. This number is estimated to increase to more than 123 million by 2040.

Hospitalisation for people with Diabetes brings its own costs, estimated to account for half of all health care expenditures for Diabetes.

November 14th is celebrated as World Diabetes Day every year. The World Health Organization theme for World Diabetes Day 2024 was Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps. The International Diabetes Federation theme was Diabetes and Wellbeing. All families are potentially affected by Diabetes and therefore it is necessary to arm families of people with Diabetes with the correct knowledge to tackle it better. This involves encouraging families to learn more about the warning signs of Diabetes and find out their risk of Type 2 Diabetes. There is a need for education and awareness to help people spot the Diabetes warning signs early. Misconceptions about Diabetes result in people trying untested and unproven treatments causing more harm than good. Awareness is the best tool to tackle Diabetes. Diet, exercise, medications and regular monitoring of blood glucose are essential aspects of Diabetes care. Marking the occasion of World Diabetes Day, the Chellaram Diabetes Institute had organised a walkathon in Pune.
