Spinal cord stimulation for diabetic neuropathy

Diabetic neuropathy is a condition of Diabetes in which the nerves all over the body are affected due to high blood sugar levels. This leads to impaired blood circulation, pain, numbness and tingling sensation in the affected area. A study published in the journal JAMA Neurology has found that spinal cord stimulation helps relieve pain in diabetic neuropathy. The study was conducted on 216 people with painful diabetic neuropathy for more than 1 year. The participants were living with Diabetes for 10 years and had diabetic neuropathy for 5 years. They were given high intensity (10 kHz) spinal cord stimulation along with conventional medical help. The participants were followed up after 6 months. The results showed that people who received spinal cord stimulation along with normal medical care had experienced a 76 per cent reduction in pain than those who had only medical care.
