Finally, his perseverance seems to have paid off- because after decades of work, he and his collaborators at Harvard University, USA, have finally prototyped new technology. This is a method that can produce millions of insulin producing cells- from stem cells. The findings have been published in the well-known scientific journal called Cell, in its October issue. Stem cells are simple cells- but which have the complex potential to transform themselves to any other cell type, given the right nurturing.
While stem cells have been repeatedly studied for use in diabetes- this exciting works takes it very near to human use. That is, if animal studies prove the utility of this new method of producing insulin-producing cells in large quantities, yet retaining their excellent insulin producing qualities.
