Gujarati Kadhi

Kadhi is one of the most favoured dishes in India. Almost every state of the country has its own style of preparing kadhi. Traditionally, Gujarati Kadhi is served piping hot with steamed rice. But it can also be enjoyed as a soup!

Serving size: Makes 5 servings


  • 25 g gram flour (besan)
  • 500 g natural low-fat yogurt
  • 2 green chillies, minced
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon groundnut oil
  • ½ teaspoon black mustard seeds
  • ½ teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • 2 dried red chillies, broken in half
  • 3-4 cloves
  • 5 cm stick cinnamon
  • A pinch of asafoetida


  1. Whisk together besan and yogurt until smooth.
  2. Add 800 ml water, mix well and then stir in green chillies.
  3. Cook on low heat by stirring continuously, until the curry reaches the right runny consistency. Add the salt.
  4. Heat the oil in a small pan.
  5. Then add the mustard and cumin seeds, curry leaves, dried red chillies, cloves, cinnamon and asafoetida.
  6. When the seeds begin to crackle, stir them into kadhi.
